LGS50. Great Northern Railway Ivatt Class 'C1' Small Atlantic 4-4-2 and Tender No. 987. In fully lined GNR two-tone green livery with brown frames. This is from a brass kit and carries the unusual maker's plate on the underside 'The Late Ken Woodhead, Builder' (I would be grateful for any information on Ken and this unusual plate). Fitted with a Buhler type motor, single stage heavy duty gearbox, Slaters driving wheels with the other wheels in turned steel, beam compensation on the leading two tender axles, and with the American pickup system. Note that there is no cab backhead fitted. The model is very lightly used and is wired with reverse polarity (so ‘forward’ on the controller is ‘reverse’ and vice versa). The prototype was into service from Doncaster Works in 1900, one of a class known as 'Klondikes' and the first 'Atlantic' class introduced to the UK. The 'Small Atlantic' categorisation refers to the boiler size (there were also 'Large Atlantics'). The most famous member of the class No. 990 'Henry Oakley' has been preserved, but the other members of the class had all been withdrawn by 1946. No. 987 had lasted until 1936, withdrawal coming from New England as LNER No. 3987. £995.
