LGST147. London Brighton & South Coast Railway Class H2 4-4-2 Atlantic & Tender No. 425. In fully lined LB&SCR umber livery. This is an older model scratchbuilt in brass almost certainly by David Barrington-Holt of London, and painted by him (with his painter's label on the underside). It is of historical interest, probably dating from 30 or 40 years ago. Fitted with a heavy duty can motor and lacking in cab and underframe detail. The model is lightly used and is wired positive to negative (so 'forward' on the controller is 'reverse' and vice-versa). It is a very slightly jerky runner but this could be due to lack of use. David Barrington-Holt (died 2024) was a renowned designer, modelmaker and restorer of mechanical models who in the earlier part of his career built models for TV and film productions. He was also a well known and skilful builder of railway models in a number of gauges. He later became famous for his collaboration with Jim Henson (of Muppet fame) and also working with Disney studios. The prototype No. 425 was into service from Brighton Works in December 1911, one of a class of only 6 locos built for the heavier London - Brighton services including the Pullman trains. They were designed under the tenure of D.E. Marsh although Lawson Billinton oversaw their construction. As Marsh had been at the Great Northern Railway under Ivatt the design closely followed that of the GNR class C1 large boilered Atlantic. No. 425 became Southern Railway number 2425 in 1923 and at some point in SR days the name 'Trevose Head' was added when all 6 locos were named. It lasted until September 1956 and was withdrawn from Brighton as BR No. 32425, by this time the class were mostly used on London - South Coast boat train duties. £795.
