The prototype was into service from Swindon Works in March 1922, one of a class of only nine locos introduced in 1919 for mixed traffic and heavy freight work. Thet were known as 'Night Owls' as much of their work was overnight on services between London and the West of England, Bristol and the West Midlands. In BR days they were sometimes used on summer passenger 'extras' although their route availability was limited. No. 4703 was withdrawn from Old Oak Common in May/June 1964. £2995.
