LGST145. Gauge 1 Electric South Eastern & Chatham Railway Wainwright Class 'D' 4-4-0 Loco and Tender No. 737. In fully lined SE&CR livery. This is a scratchbuilt model in brass and other metals by D. Hefford, painted by Chris Littledale of Brighton (the loco is signed on the underside). Fitted with solid cast wheels, a large open framed Pittman-type motor, a single stage gearbox, dummy inside motion, and excellent cab detail. However despite having a motor this model appears to have been built mainly as a display model for the following reason. There are no electrical pickups, no wiring evident and there is electrical continuity (ie. a 'short') between all 4 driving wheels and the chassis. In order to run the driving wheels on one side of the loco should be insulated from the chassis with electrical pickups making contact with the wheel rims but this is not the case. So the loco is being sold as 'electrically incomplete - for display purposes only'. The model is very lightly used. The prototype was one of a class of 50 locos and entered service in 1901 from Ashford Works. It became Southern Railway No. 1737 and subsequently BR number 31737 (one of 28 passing into BR ownership), being withdrawn from Guildford in 1956 for preservation as an original (unrebuilt) 'D' class and entering the National Collection in 1975. It is on display at York Railway Museum. £995.
