LKR29. Great Western Railway Dean Outside Framed 'Aberdare' Class 2-6-0 and Tender No. 2601. In plain unlined GWR green with 'Great Western' in gold shaded red as running in the post-war austerity livery circa 1919 - 1934. This is from a Gladiator brass kit built by Peter Roles with his maker's label on the underside. Fitted with fully working inside motion, an ABC-type multi-stage gearbox, Canon or similar motor, compensation on the leading 2 loco axles and leading 2 tender axles, American pickup system, Slaters wheels on the loco with solid cast wheels on the tender, and with superb cab detail and crew. The model is lightly used. The original GWR prototype No. 2601 was a 4-6-0 with No. 2602 being a 2-6-0, these locos being known as 'Krugers'. Built in 1899 they were not successful and were withdrawn in 1906. The numbers were re-used and No. 2601 as modelled here as a 2-6-0 is one of the production series built at Swindon Works in February 1906 as No. 2681 but renumbered to No. 2601 shortly after. The 'Aberdares' were built between 1900 and 1907 with the class totalling 81 locos. One of their primary uses was the haulage of coal trains between Aberdare and Swindon. No. 2601 was withdrawn in September 1936. SOLD.
