The prototype was into service from Doncaster Works in June 1937 to Edinburgh Haymarket as LNER No. 4488, renumbered to No. 9 in the LNER 1946 renumbering scheme and subsequently becoming BR No. 60009. The Springbok crest was added in 1954. After 25 years at Haymarket it moved to Aberdeen Ferryhill in May 1962 for use on the Glasgow - Aberdeen 3 hour expresses, a swansong for several of the A4's. It was withdrawn from Ferryhill in June 1966 and purchased privately for preservation by John Cameron. After a long career in preservation including much main line running it has now been retired to Mr. Cameron's private museum in Fife. SOLD.
