LMF01. An interesting and highly unusual model of modified LNER A1/1 Pacific No. 4470 ‘Great Northern’ in LNER blue after rebuilding by Thompson in 1945. This is possibly kit, or more likely scratchbuilt, to a good standard although the construction is quite basic. With double reduction gearbox, Mashima type motor, and excellent cab detail. More weight would need to be added for serious running. Well painted in authentic LNER blue which is said to be similar to the pre-grouping Great Eastern blue – this livery was carried as it entered traffic after rebuilding in September 1945. Much has been said about Thompson’s willingness to modify a proven Gresley design and it is well documented. The loco was allocated to King Cross after rebuilding, it was the subject of further design changes in 1946 to create the better known profile (full length cab side sheets, smoke deflectors fitted) and was withdrawn from Doncaster in November 1962 with bad cylinder wear. £895.
